Protests are intensifying after the death of young Iranian girl Masa Amini. The country’s security forces are struggling to deal with these women-led protests. They are firing to suppress the protest. The number of people killed by security forces during protests in the country’s Kurdistan and West Azerbaijan provinces rose to five on Thursday.
The United Nations has expressed concern over the security forces’ attacks on the protests. Amnesty International, a private international human rights organization based in London, has condemned the incident.
Masa Amini died on September 16 in the custody of Iran’s policy police. Then on September 17, protests started over his burial. These protests spread across the country. More than 100 people have died in the protests so far. As young people were killed in the protests, the protests took a bigger form in the country’s universities.
Last night there were large protests in Iran’s capital Tehran, Baneh, Mahabad and other cities. After the protest last night, the international media reported that one person was killed by security forces that day. The death toll has increased. Among them, two were killed in Baneh town and three in Mahbad town.
Regarding the repression of the security forces in this protest, Henry Rome, an expert on Iran at the Washington Institute, said that the government has taken terrible steps to suppress the protests. It is believed that the protests have intensified due to this.
Meanwhile, last Wednesday and Thursday there were large protests in different cities of Iran. London-based non-governmental international human rights organization Amnesty International said that at least eight people were killed by security forces during the two-day protest. The organization has condemned such action of the government.
The United Nations has expressed concern over the crackdown on the protests. Raveena Shamdasani, spokeswoman of the organization’s human rights office, said, “We can see that there have been human rights violations.” Many protestors’ families are being harassed. Even the bodies of many who died in the protests are not being returned.
